The 5 Simple Points

It's been a while, more than a while actually, that I've shared anything on my blog / website. I've been occupied with ideas and equivalent self-doubt about those ideas, which has stopped me from putting my words out there. However, I have been relatively active on my instagram, which I find to be a comparatively more social outlet for my blog and its thoughts.

This post is about five ways I've been focusing on improving my life, and over the past few weeks, I've noticed slight positive shifts in my daily life. Without any further ado:

1. prioritize my time

This is one of my main goals in life. It isn't precisely about being punctual, but about achieving a systematic discipline balanced with rational or humane flexibility. I admit to have failed at it at least a hundred times, but each time I find myself better at it and more determined to follow it than before. I can confidently say that achieving this goal would automatically pave a smoother pathway for at least half of my other aims in life. The thing is, that we all have limited time and there are an endless number of things that we can be, do or have. I find that it can be overwhelming to pick and choose what I want to do with my time, but very exciting at the same time. Having understood the unknown yet undeniable restriction of time in life means that I cannot do everything. And, it's okay. But it also means that everything I want must be prioritized accordingly, and this applies to daily goals and long-term goals. On a daily basis, it helps to just begin with a to-do list but number and order your tasks based on importance. This - prioritizing your time - if done right, I am sure would enable anyone to achieve their goals and aspirations.

2. grasping every opportunity

Being honest with my readers and myself, I have to acknowledge the opportunities that I've missed. In order to grasp all the opportunities that the future gives me, I had to look back and understand the missed ones. I know the reason I failed to grasp some amazing opportunities are primarily because I didn't prioritize my time well and the innumerable times I let my emotions get the best of me. However, instead off focusing on the what-ifs, we should choose to understand our faults and move on to the better. If you can remember and acknowledge the times you went lazy, or didn't prioritize your time, or let different bits of life hinder you from grabbing those opportunities, that's a lesson on its own. It's one step closer to being able to grasp what the future holds for you, because now you're aware of what stopped you the last time, and would likely not let that happen again.

3. not letting emotions take over

Initially, I'd thought of this bit as improving my work ethic, but having a strong work ethic resolves around discipline and hard work, which is something that I'm more than willing to put in. What I realized needed work was my control over my emotions. Referring back to missed opportunities, one of the main reasons of that failure was my overwhelming emotions. Being overly emotional, sympathetic or empathetic is great until it starts to affect your daily life, choices and ultimately, other significant aspects of your life, such as career or relationships. To control the negative effects of my overpowering emotions, such as sulking in bed all day because I felt sad (which was becoming a daily practice) required a change of mindset (thanks to my best friend's support). It was a difficult at first, but I enforced a constant reminder of the bigger picture: my purpose and goals in life. Having even a general idea of what I wanted my life story to be about helped in pushing through the days full of overwhelming negative emotions.

4. read (more)

Read more, or at least, just read. I knew I wasn't reading enough. In 2019, I only read 5 books. Being a "book worm" during my teenage years, I know the power of reading. It opens your mind to the concept of various personalities, places, concepts, times, mindsets, imaginations, and you name it. There was a time when I used to get told off by my parents for reading too late into the night, but eventually I found myself drawing in university readings, which took over my time. I would recommend everyone to read, as I pursue it as a lifetime hobby myself. What I enjoy and love the most about reading is being introduced to new concepts. Now, even Netflix shows do this, but reading forces your brain to imagine everything in your brain instead of it being displayed on a screen (much easier, I know). Also, it's fascinating to know that you will never read a book where you can actually guess what the next pages hold, and I am so childishly amazed by that fact.

5. take care of myself (being healthy)

This is a very broad phrase and I do mean it in the broad sense. Mental Health is just as important as physical health, which means that our physical health is just as important as well. Your body is your vehicle. It's bound to deteriorate with age and time, and it's not meant to last forever. The less you look after your vehicle, the poorer the quality of your ride and the shorter its lifespan. If you consider our body as a vehicle, I imagine that we'd all want smooth and healthy rides through this journey called life. And for that, we need the best quality fuel. Food that doesn't necessarily taste the best is that highest quality fuel for our bodies. And, I've personally experienced the difference that drinking more water does to my energy levels. Taking care of yourself comprises of significant and foundational factors such as, your nutrition, water intake, physical exercise and a healthy mindset.

And these 5 simple pointers conclude what I had to share with you all. I agree that it's all easier said than done. However, keeping these pointers in my mind as things to remember and focus on has actually kept me distracted from the lows. I've shared everything here with sheer honesty, which I'm aware highlight my imperfections, but sharing them and laying them out in front of me helps to ignore them all in favour of the bigger picture: life.
